Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An inro is a traditional Japanese multi-tiered container designed to hold small items such as medicines or seals, suspended from the obi sash. Tsuikoku refers specifically to the technique of building up multiple layers of black lacquer which are then carved with high-relief relief designs.

Craftsmen applied dozens of thin layers of sap from the lacquer tree over a wooden base, allowing each layer to dry thoroughly before applying the next. Once the black lacquer reached the desired thickness, artisans carved detailed pictorial scenes into the surface using specialised chisels.

Authenticity is determined by assessing the depth and precision of the carving, the natural wear around the cord channels, the construction of the interior compartments, and the subtle oxidation of the lacquer consistent with nineteenth-century age.

Small objects like inro are best presented in acrylic display stands, shadow boxes, or glass cabinets within a gentlemans library or minimalist shelving unit, where the intricate relief details can be examined closely.

Lacquer objects must be kept away from direct sunlight and extreme changes in humidity to prevent cracking or fading. Dusting should be done gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth without using liquid cleaners or chemical polishes.
