This Victorian envelope card table displays a warm brown mahogany timber with visible grain variations across its four triangular hinged leaves, which fold over a single frieze drawer fitted with two ornate brass drop handles. The sturdy central turned pedestal supports splayed quadform legs resting on small castors, giving the piece a compact footprint suited for a parlour or sitting room. Standing 71 cm high by 78 cm wide and 78 cm deep, the table fits neatly into an empty corner or beside a sofa, providing a practical surface for card games and social gatherings. Beneath the swivel top, the design incorporates internal gaming wells and a baize playing space accessed via a counter drawer. The surface shows minor dings and signs of careful use from its period, maintaining a functional character suitable for daily domestic placement in a study or library. The splayed legs and central pedestal anchor the freestanding design firmly on the floor while keeping the overall profile light and accessible for everyday enjoyment.

FAQs

An envelope card table is a specialised piece of nineteenth-century gaming furniture featuring four triangular folding leaves that open outwards like an envelope to reveal a square playing surface, often fitted with baize lining and counter wells.

Victorian card tables were predominantly constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, frequently incorporating brass hinges, castors, and handles, alongside wool felt or baize linings for the interior playing surfaces.

Authentic Victorian examples typically display hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, stamped brass hinges or castors, a rotating table surface mechanism that unlocks the leaves, and characteristic period carving or fluting on the central pedestal support.

When closed, an envelope table functions as a compact side table or hall console, ideal for displaying table lamps, books, or ceramics, while providing instant functionality as a gaming table when extended.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft microfiber cloth and apply high-quality beeswax twice yearly following the wood grain, keeping the piece away from direct sunlight, central heating radiators, and excess moisture to prevent warping or cracking.
