Description

A large Victorian tilt-top centre table finished with a richly figured, bookmatched burr walnut oval top with fine floral marquetry inlay and thumb-moulded edge. Set on a well-carved solid walnut clustered pedestal base with turned column supports and a central finial, raised on four bold cabriole legs with acanthus carving and original brass and ceramic castors.

The combination of the figured burr walnut inlaid top and heavily carved, imposing base gives the piece real presence, ideal as an impressive hall or drawing room centre table or equally suitable for four-person dining.

Presented in very good antique condition with a warm, even surface and light wear consistent with age. The tilt action operates smoothly, now secured with a later pin catch. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1860.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Victorian centre tables frequently showcase revivalist influences, intricate wood veneers such as burr walnut, and robust pedestal bases designed to display decorative grain patterns.

These pieces typically feature solid timber carcases overlaid with decorative veneers like burr walnut or mahogany, secured with traditional joinery and supported by carved wooden pedestals often terminating in castors.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate hand-cut joinery, natural timber ageing, subtle variations in veneer matching, and a working brass tilt-top mechanism rather than modern hardware.

Placing this table in a minimalist room allows the complex wood grain to serve as a focal point, contrasting effectively against neutral walls and modern seating.

Maintain walnut furniture by avoiding direct sunlight and excessive humidity fluctuations, periodically applying a quality microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the polished finish.
