Imari porcelain originates from Arita in Japan and gained prominence during the Edo period, characterised by rich underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze enamel decoration in iron-red, gold, and orange motifs.

Crafted from kaolin clay, Imari ceramic undergoes an initial high-temperature firing for the porcelain body and blue underglaze, followed by low-temperature enamel glaze firings and gilded detailing applied over the glaze.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display subtle variations in hand-painted motifs, natural age wear to the surface gilding, and visible spur marks or scars on the reverse from kiln supports.

An Imari charger functions as a visual focal point when mounted on a neutral wall, positioned on a wooden plate stand atop a sideboard, or arranged inside a traditional glazed cabinet.

Dust regularly using a soft dry microfibre cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleansers or abrasive pads; if light cleaning is required, use lukewarm water and dry immediately to protect gilded details.
