George II Cuban Mahogany Small Drop-leaf Gateleg Table – (Georgian, Mid 18th Century, Pad Foot, Occasional / Dining Table Circa 1740 )

18th century
Description

A fine and early George II period Cuban mahogany drop-leaf gateleg table, dating to circa 1740. The well-figured mahogany top is of near square form, constructed from three heavy planks of beautifully grained early timber. Each end leaf is supported by a single gateleg, giving the table both practicality and elegance. The plain frieze is raised on tapering turned legs, ending in offset pad feet – a hallmark of the period.

Compact and versatile, this piece works equally well as a small dining table, occasional table, or side table. Its restrained Georgian form, fine timber, and lovely proportions make it an excellent and highly decorative early 18th-century example.

Dimensions (Approximate):

Height: 70.5 cm (27.75")

Width (leaves up): 102.5 cm (40.375")

Width (leaves down): 36 cm (14.25")

Depth: 91.25 cm (36")

Condition:

In very good original condition, commensurate with age. Structurally sound and sturdy. The table retains its original surface with a rich, mellow colour and attractive aged patina. Never refinished or French polished – only sensitively cleaned and waxed, preserving the authenticity of its surface. Minor marks and old scratches as expected, all now well polished over, adding to its character. A fine, untouched example, ready for use and display.
