Mid 19th Century Mahogany Miniature Centre Table

19th century
Description

An Exceptional Quality Mid 19th Century Mahogany Miniature Centre Table, Having Superbly Figured Circular Tilting Top, Over Elegant Carved Central Column And Triform Plateau Base, With Carved Scrolling Feet.

There is often debate as to the original purpose regarding many items of miniature furniture, with some people believing them to be “apprentice pieces”.

This was when an aspiring craftsmen who was seeking work at an established cabinet making workshop would create something to showcase his talents.

Many others believe that they were made as “salesman’s sample pieces” which was when scale models of a workshop’s output were made in advance of a road trip, during which the salesman used these models to present to prospective clients and take orders based on their designs.

These miniature centre tables come in many different shapes, sizes, qualities and designs and were nearly always created as salesman’s sample pieces, i.e. scale models of bigger versions.

This particular one has been constructed from excellent quality and superbly figured mahogany, and has elaborate carved decoration which really adds to the elegance of the piece.

Circa 1840.

Height – 9.75in.

Diameter – 12in.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the nineteenth century, miniature tables were frequently constructed as apprentice pieces to demonstrate a craftsmans skill or as trade samples created to present designs to prospective clients without transporting full-scale furniture.

Craftsmen predominantly utilised dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, and walnut, employing full-scale joinery techniques including turned central columns, hand-dovetailed joints, and carved triform plinth bases.

Authentic period examples exhibit natural timber shrinkage across the circular top, historical hand-tool marks on unpolished undersides, and original fixing hardware alongside genuine surface patination.

A miniature table functions as an elevated accent pedestal on a sideboard, desk, or bookcase, providing visual height for displaying smaller decorative objects or curiosities.

Maintenance involves routine dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and periodic application of a high-grade beeswax polish, ensuring the timber remains away from direct heat sources and moisture.
