Description

A handsome late Victorian games table, featuring a finely inlaid checkerboard chess table top of alternating sycamore and walnut veneers within a mahogany surround, raised on a turned mahogany pedestal and tripod base with shaped and carved feet.

The lower mahogany surfaces have taken on a beautiful natural crazing, providing a particularly striking aesthetic. Compact, functional and great looking, perfect for a drawing room, library or study, offering both practical use for games or use as a wine table with a strong decorative presence.

Presented in very good antique condition with surface wear consistent with age and use, the wood having developed a warm characterful patina. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1890.

Victorian games tables are specialized pieces of furniture designed for indoor leisure activities such as chess, checkers, and card games, gaining immense popularity during the 19th century as domestic parlor entertainment flourished.

These tables were typically crafted from dense hardwoods like mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, often featuring precision wood marquetry or inlay for the playing surfaces, supported by turned central pedestals and tripod bases.

Authenticity is identified through period-correct joinery, natural patina on the wood, hand-cut inlay rather than printed veneers, and traditional hand-turned components characteristic of 19th-century cabinetmaking.

An antique games table functions effectively as an accent piece in a study or living room, either styled with a vintage chess set or left bare to highlight the intricate wood inlay against modern minimalist decor.

Preserve antique wood by keeping it out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources to prevent warping, applying microcrystalline wax periodically, and dusting gently with a soft, dry cloth.
