Staffordshire flatback figures are earthenware ornaments manufactured in Staffordshire, England, primarily during the 19th century. They feature a flattened, unpainted reverse side designed to sit flush against a mantelpiece or wall shelf.

These figures were created using press-moulding techniques with local Staffordshire clay, followed by a primary biscuit firing. They were coated in a lead glaze and finished with hand-painted overglaze enamel decoration and occasional gilt accents.

Authentic period pieces generally feature a plain or minimally detailed flat reverse, a small release hole in the ceramic body, and subtle wear to the glaze and enamels consistent with age. Later reproductions often display fully moulded backs and different glaze characteristics.
