Rare 18th Century Elm Country Tripod Table

18th century
Description

A rare 18th Century Country Elm Tripod Table with bird cage action. With a two piece top, turned stem and unusual shaped legs and to the base.

Contemporary inventories indicate that tripod tables were constructed from a variety of timbers, but due to the susceptibility of Elm, Fruitwood, and Walnut examples to damp conditions and insect attack, few have survived.

Excellent rich colour often associated with Elm and in very good condition having just a later catch and a small amount of old woodworm to the top block.

A rare survivor of early 18th-century English country furniture.

A country tripod table is a small circular occasional table from the Georgian era, constructed with a central turned pedestal supported by three outward-curving legs and frequently incorporating a tilt-top mechanism.

Craftsmen predominantly utilised native hardwoods such as elm, oak, fruitwood, and walnut, employing hand-turned central columns and simple peg joinery to construct these functional household items.

Authentic period examples exhibit irregular timber shrinkage across the circular top, evidence of hand-planing on the underside, original wrought iron or brass tilt-catches, and historic patination along the legs.

Position this compact piece beside an armchair as a functional drinks surface, or place it in a hallway alcove decorated with a ceramic vase or table lamp.

Regularly dust the timber with a soft cloth and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax paste annually, ensuring the table is kept away from direct heat sources to prevent warping.
