FAQs

Victorian burr walnut furniture is characterised by the figure of walnut burl veneers, which create complex, swirling grain patterns. Popular during the mid-to-late nineteenth century, these pieces often feature elaborate hand carving, turned stretchers, and curved legs.

Tables from this period typically feature solid walnut or mahogany substructures topped with figured burr walnut veneers. Hardware and mobility features often include brass fittings and ceramic or brass castors.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery marks, natural timber shrinkage along the grain, and aged patination on wood surfaces. Original castors, turned stretchers, and period-correct veneer construction on the underside also indicate age.

Place the table alongside clean-lined modern sofas or in an entryway to create contrast between warm, figured wood and contemporary decor. Pair with neutral paint palettes to highlight the intricate walnut grain.

Regularly dust with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality natural beeswax polish every few months to nourish the wood veneer. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or fading.
