Turned Lignum Vitae Linen Smoother Burnisher Slickenstone Saddlers Treen

Early 19th century turned lignum vitae linen smoother or slickenstone of traditional design, made from dark heart wood.
 
Slickenstones or linen smoothers, more commonly found in glass, were used for smoothing, burnishing and glazing linen.
 
Also used by saddlers for smoothing hide.
 
Good colour and patination, not recently wax polished would respond well.
 
In excellent condition showing reasonable signs of age and use, nothing bad.
 
Height 5,1/2'' or 140mm, diameter 3,5/8'' or 92mm weight 317 grams.

Linen is a strong, long-lasting material. Linen fabric improves with time, use and washing becoming softer, supple and more absorbent. In fact my sister-in-law''s neighbors in her French village, say a linen towel has to be used and washed at least 50 times before it is really at it''s best !
