Staffordshire spaniels were mass-produced by pottery works in North Staffordshire, England, during the 19th century. They became immensely popular as mantelpiece ornaments in Victorian middle-class homes, traditionally displayed as facing pairs.

These figures were typically slip-cast or hand-pressed from earthenware clay, then hand-painted with underglaze colours and gilt accents, often featuring copper lustre highlights before being fired in a kiln.

Authentic pieces usually exhibit crazing in the glaze, vent holes on the underside or back, hand-painted facial features rather than transfers, and sometimes unglazed bases with signs of age and wear.

They make striking focal points when placed on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or sideboard, adding a touch of traditional character and eclectic charm to contemporary spaces.

Dust them gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using water, abrasive cleaners, or chemical solvents, as these can damage the delicate antique glaze and wear away the gold lustre.
