Description

Early Heals Antique Oak Chequer Inlay Side Table

This is a fabulous, early Heals antique oak side table, a design by Ambrose Heal himself. It has been many years since we have had one of these Heals side tables into stock. They are so useful as side tables by armchairs and sofas. The round oak table top has a lovely chequer inlay around the edge with four, reverse taping legs that are joined by a flat stretcher. To two sides are twin oak slats with the matching decorative chequer inlays. A super example in very good condition. Dates to around 1900.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

The Arts and Crafts movement emerged in the late 19th century as a reaction against mass production, emphasising traditional craftsmanship, visible construction methods, and simple, functional forms.

Cabinet makers predominantly used native hardwoods such as oak, walnut, and chestnut, often incorporating subtle details like hand-cut inlay, mortise and tenon joints, and brass hardware.

Authentic pieces from this maker often feature honest construction, distinctive timber selection, subtle geometric inlay or carving, and occasionally early paper labels or maker stamps beneath the top surface.

Pairing a piece with clean architectural lines and natural wood tones alongside minimalist contemporary seating creates a balanced contrast that highlights the historic craftsmanship.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying a traditional beeswax polish to nourish the grain.
