Pietra dura, meaning hard stone in Italian, is a historic technique of inlaying cut and fitted polished coloured stones to create pictorial images, which reached its height during the Renaissance in Florence.

These pieces are constructed using meticulously shaped sections of hardstones such as marble, jasper, chalcedony, and lapis lazuli, which are flush-mounted into a dark stone or slate base.

Authentic period pieces exhibit extremely tight joints between individual stone segments without visible filler, often paired with naturalistic shading achieved through the inherent grain and colour variations of the minerals.

Such historic artworks can be mounted on neutral walls to serve as a focal point or displayed on specialized brackets, contrasting effectively against contemporary minimalist architecture.

Preservation involves keeping the plaque away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity levels, cleaning only with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, and avoiding chemical solvents that could affect the stone polish.
