Refectory tables originated in medieval monasteries, where they were used in the refectory or dining hall for communal meals, evolving through the centuries into domestic dining furniture.

These tables are constructed from solid native timber, traditionally joined using pegged mortise and tenon joints, hand-planed planks, and sturdy stretcher bases for stability.

Authenticity is indicated by period tool marks, timber shrinkage, natural oxidisation, hand-cut joinery, and wear patterns consistent with age rather than artificial distress.

Pairing a heavy timber table with contemporary minimalist seating or industrial lighting creates a balanced contrast between historical texture and modern lines.

Maintain antique oak by avoiding direct sunlight, keeping ambient humidity stable, using coasters and placemats, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish the timber.
