An antique French glass paperweight originates from the mid-nineteenth century, attributed to Baccarat. This spherical clear glass dome encloses an internal lampwork pansy flower featuring burgundy, yellow, and blue petals, alongside a white and pink centre. A detailed green stem and multiple green leaves extend below the blossom, all encased within solid transparent material. Measuring 5.3 cm high and 7.2 cm wide, this heavy collectible piece sits atop an office desk inside a gentleman's library. Surface wear includes light scratches and minor marks consistent with genuine age and handling. The smooth rounded exterior shows high clarity throughout the glass body.

Mid-19th century France marked the golden age of paperweight production, led by manufacturers such as Baccarat, Saint-Louis, and Clichy. During this period, artisans adapted ancient Venetian glassworking techniques to encapsulate detailed lampwork flowers and millefiori canes inside lead crystal domes.

These objects are constructed using clear lead crystal and coloured molten glass. The internal floral motifs are sculpted using the lampworking technique, where individual glass petals, stems, and leaves are shaped over a flame before being encased in clear glass.

Authentic pieces are identified by high-density lead glass, optical clarity, and specific design details such as star-cut or concavely ground bases. Artisans also used signature cane initials or distinct execution styles in the leaves and petals.

A glass paperweight functions well as a decorative accent on an office desk, styled atop a stack of design books, or displayed inside a lit glass cabinet to highlight the optical properties of the crystal.

Clean glass paperweights using a dry microfibre cloth to remove dust. Keep the object away from direct intense sunlight, as solid glass spheres can act as magnifying lenses, and avoid abrasive cleaning solutions that might scratch the surface.
