17th Century and Later Oak Refectory Dining Table – Carolean / Jacobean Style, Country Farmhouse Kitchen, 18th Century Elements

17th century
Description

This handsome oak refectory table combines a mid-17th century base with an early 18th century plank top, creating a piece full of character and history while remaining highly practical for modern use.

The early Georgian top is formed from two substantial oak planks with cleated bread-board ends, showing natural age, wear, and colour. The Jacobean/Carolean base (c. mid-1600s) features a shaped frieze with scrolled lower corners to one side, with the remaining sides and ends plain. It stands on square block shoulders and conforming feet, supported by robust turned bulbous legs united by heavy stretchers – a classic early country house form.

Dimensions:

Height: 75.5 cm (29.75")

Length: 207 cm (81.5")

Width: 79.75 cm (31.5")

Condition:

In good condition for its age, structurally very sound and sturdy. The 17th-century base has natural age splits and some historic old worm (treated), plus a couple of small old repairs inside the legs. The end friezes are later replacements. The 18th-century top shows natural separation between the planks, with rounded corners and a recent restain; secured to the base with discreet metal brackets (easily removable if desired). Overall, this is a very well-presented table, strong, robust, and suitable for everyday use. It has been through our workshop, sensitively cleaned, waxed, and is now ready for use.

A charming antique table that perfectly balances age, authenticity, and practicality – ideal for a farmhouse kitchen, country house dining room, or as a centrepiece in a modern setting.
