This Georgian antique footbath takes an oval earthenware form, finished in a blue and white transferware glaze. The ceramic vessel displays twin looped patterned handles on either side and a detailed floral rim border. The central transferware landscape pattern depicts a serene river scene with a stone bridge, architectural buildings, foliage, and distant hills. A secondary botanical band decorates the lower base section of the basin. The interior and exterior surfaces show a glossy ceramic glaze throughout. Measuring 20 cm high, 48 cm wide, and 31 cm deep, this practical piece suits placement on a large sideboard top. In a modern home, it functions well as a decorative display vessel, a planter for potted greenery, or an impressive decorative cachepot in a living area or hallway.

FAQs

In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, ceramic footbaths were functional domestic vessels used for personal hygiene, foot soaks, and therapeutic bathing in private bedchambers.

These vessels were typically formed from sturdy earthenware or pearlware, decorated using copper-plate underglaze transfer printing techniques, and sealed with a clear protective glaze.

Authentic pieces generally display impressed or printed makers marks on the base, clear detail in the transfer pattern, and natural wear along the lower rim consistent with age.

In contemporary settings, these large containers are frequently styled as table centrepieces, filled with potted orchids, or used as wine coolers during formal entertaining.

Clean gently by hand using mild washing liquid and warm water, avoiding prolonged submersion, harsh chemicals, or abrasive pads that could damage the glazed surface.
