Late 19th Century Mahogany Serpentine Shaped Card Table in the Chippendale Style

1900 - 1920

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chippendale style card tables feature mid-to-late 18th-century design influences, including serpentine or shaped fronts, detailed relief carving such as acanthus scrolls or blind fretwork, and straight molded or cabriole legs.

These tables were constructed primarily from dense West Indian or South American mahogany, featuring hand-carved friezes, hand-cut dovetail joints on internal frames, and double-hinged tops supported by rear swing-leg mechanisms.

Authentic 19th-century revival pieces display hand-planed secondary timbers beneath, natural oxidisation on unpolished surfaces, original brass hinges with hand-cut screws, and consistent tool marks along the carved apron.

When closed, the table serves as a slim hall console or side table beneath a mirror or artwork, offering structured proportions and warm wood tones that anchor both classic and eclectic entryways or living spaces.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the wood away from direct sunlight, radiator heat sources, and damp environments to prevent warping or cracking.
