Description

This is a first for me.....two late 18thc "Pratt Ware" glazed figures, these delightful primitive figures would have been played with by the young children of the time....and I would think most of these "toys" would certainly have been broken over time and just thrown away, which would explain why I haven't seen any before....they are both decorated in the oxide colours, yellow, orange, green and brown with the attractive blue of the tin glaze coming through....both in excellent unrestored condition...

English. C1780-90. Literature: Pratt Ware 1780-1840 by John & Griselda Lewis, page 258 for three examples of Pratt Ware toys.

FAQs

Pratt ware refers to a type of English earthenware, predominantly produced in Staffordshire and Yorkshire during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, characterised by underglaze colour painting.

These figures were typically slip-cast or hand-modelled from refined earthenware clay, coated with a thin lead glaze containing a small amount of cobalt to give a bluish-white pearl-like tint, and hand-painted with metallic oxide colours.

Authentic pieces often exhibit fine crazing in the glaze, pooling of cobalt blue in crevices, hand-painted underglaze polychrome decoration, and characteristic manufacturing flaws such as firing cracks or unglazed bases typical of period earthenware.

These small-scale historical items work effectively when displayed inside glass-fronted cabinets, on architectural mantelpieces, or styled alongside modern minimalist objects to create a curated, eclectic contrast.

Antique ceramics should be kept away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity. Cleaning should be restricted to gentle dusting with a soft, dry brush, avoiding water immersion or chemical cleaning agents which can damage the fragile glaze.
