Joint stools originated in medieval and seventeenth-century England, constructed by joiners using pegged mortise and tenon joints rather than simple carpentry, serving initially as seating and later as general-purpose domestic platforms.

These pieces typically feature solid English oak frames assembled with wooden pegs, often embellished with turned barley twist legs and upholstered or lined with embossed and tooled leather secured by brass tacks.

Authentic items display hand-cut joinery, period-appropriate tool marks, natural timber shrinkage, oxidisation around metal tacks, and wear patterns consistent with centuries of manual use rather than machine manufacture.

This piece works effectively as a compact side table beside a sofa or as a standalone display surface to add warmth, tactile leather texture, and historic character to minimalist or transitional rooms.

Maintain the wood with microcrystalline wax and treat the aged leather gently with specialised leather conditioners, avoiding direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent timber splitting and leather degradation.
