During the Georgian era, powdered wigs were an essential component of formal fashion for both men and women. Wig stands, also known as block stands, were used to hold, style, and store these elaborate hairpieces when they were not being worn.

These items were typically turned on a lathe using dense hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or lignum vitae. Construction often featured a weighted circular base, a slender turned column, and a domed or spherical top designed to support the interior cap of the wig without distorting its shape.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-turned tool marks, deep patination developed over centuries, and traditional joinery or threading where the stem meets the base. The choice of dense, period-specific timbers and natural wax finishes rather than modern varnishes are key indicators of age.

Due to their sculptural form and minimalist silhouette, these stands serve as striking decorative objects on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or console table. They can be displayed purely as historical artifacts or repurposed to hold modern millinery and headphones.

Preservation requires keeping the wood away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity levels to prevent cracking. Periodic application of microcrystalline wax helps maintain the surface finish without attracting dust or harming the historical patina.
