This Regency mahogany D-shaped side table dates from circa 1815 and originates as a later adaptation from a card table. The piece displays a warm brown timber colour with contrasting boxwood stringing along the edge of the top, complemented by geometric boxwood inlay on the frieze. It stands on slender reeded tapered legs with turned feet beneath a moulded apron. Measuring 74 cm high, 86 cm wide, and 44 cm deep, the table fits neatly into hallways beside the front door or serves as a console against a living room wall. It brings classic British elegance to everyday interior spaces without dominating a room.

Regency style furniture originated in early nineteenth-century Britain, characterised by classical Greek and Roman influences, symmetrical proportions, dark fine woods such as mahogany, and refined decorative details including reeded legs and inlay stringing.

Cabinetmakers primarily utilised dense West Indian or Cuban mahogany for its fine figure, frequently incorporating boxwood or satinwood inlays along with solid oak or pine secondary woods for interior framing.

Authentic pieces feature hand-planed timber surfaces, hand-cut dovetail or mortise-and-tenon joinery, hand-carved reeding on the legs, and natural oxidisation on the underside of the woodwork.

Position the table against an entrance hall wall or behind a sofa, styling it with contemporary ceramics, framed artwork, or a simple table lamp to contrast classical woodwork with clean modern textures.

Keep mahogany furniture away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber movement and fading, dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, and apply a natural beeswax polish annually.
