FAQs

The Georgian style encompasses furniture produced during the reigns of the first four British monarchs of the House of Hanover, spanning from 1714 to 1830. This period is characterised by refined proportions, classical symmetry, and a shift towards lighter, more elegant forms as cabinetmakers refined their craft.

Georgian tables were predominantly constructed from imported timbers such as mahogany, often reinforced with secondary softwoods like oak or pine for internal framing. Construction typically involved hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, dovetailing on any drawer components, and the use of brass castors to facilitate movement.

Authenticating a Georgian table involves examining the timber grain, tool marks, and construction techniques. Genuine period pieces will exhibit hand-planed surfaces, irregular dovetails, period-appropriate brass hardware, and natural oxidisation and wear consistent with age.

Pairing a period dining table with contemporary seating creates a balanced, eclectic aesthetic that highlights the craftsmanship of the antique timber. Keeping surrounding decor minimal and lighting modern allows the historical piece to serve as a functional centrepiece.

Antique wooden surfaces should be kept out of direct sunlight and away from direct heat sources to prevent the timber from drying and splitting. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasional application of traditional beeswax help maintain the natural lustre of the polish.
