Art Nouveau terracotta bust ‘Inspiration’ by Lambert Escaler
Signed to verso. Circa 1905.
42cm High.
This particular maiden is regarded for showing his pre-Raphaelite influence at its strongest.
Lambert Escaler i Milŕ (1874-1957) Barcelona, Spain, was a playwriter as well as a multi-discipline artist, but is mostly remembered as a sculptor and decorator. His terracotta’s showing women in the Art Nouveau style, that he made mostly between 1900 and 1910, are his best-known work. One of the secrets of his success was that his terracotta’s were produced in series, so they were cheaper than stone or marble sculptures. He made terracotta sculptures from plaster moulds, which allowed him to make a big quality production. The colour was later added without need of a second baking. The success was immense.
