FAQs

Match strikes are functional desk and tabletop accessories designed to ignite strike-anywhere matches, peaking in popularity during the Victorian and Edwardian eras before the widespread adoption of safety matches.

They were typically fashioned from heavy natural stones such as onyx, marble, or alabaster paired with cast metals, often featuring cold-painted bronze figural ornaments crafted by European artisans.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit natural mineral variations, hand-chiselled striker panels, genuine age-related patination on the bronze elements, and precise metal-working techniques typical of early 20th-century workshops.

These compact sculptural objects function well as curated desk details, bookshelf accents, or coffee table styling elements that introduce historical texture and metallic contrast.

Maintenance requires gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding abrasive cleaners or moisture on the stone surface, and protecting the patinated bronze from direct sunlight and humidity.
