The use of a baton became standard practice in the early 19th century as orchestras grew larger and more complex, replacing earlier methods of time-keeping such as violin bows or rolled paper.

Traditional batons were typically fashioned from lightweight woods such as ebony, fruitwood, or rosewood, often featuring fitted handles made of precious metals like silver or ivory.

Authenticity is determined by examining material wear, hallmarks on any metal mounts, traditional craftsmanship techniques, and the presence of a fitted period storage case.

A baton and its presentation case can be displayed inside a glass shadow box on a study wall or placed flat on a library bookshelf as a sophisticated nod to musical history.

Preservation requires storing the object in a stable environment away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to protect both the delicate wood and any metallic elements.
