Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Japanese brush pot, or fudate, is a cylindrical vessel traditionally placed on a scholars or painters desk to hold writing and painting brushes upright. During the Meiji period (18681912), these objects were crafted with intricate details, often featuring carved relief work and mixed-material inlays tailored for both domestic appreciation and international export.

Craftspeople predominantly used durable hardwoods or bamboo sections as the base cylinder. These objects were frequently embellished with high-relief carvings and inlaid with iridescent mother-of-pearl shell, bone, horn, polished hardstones, and lacquered details in the traditional Shibayama technique.

Authentic pieces exhibit precise joinery, fine relief carving, and carefully fitted inlays. Natural age-related patination on the timber, subtle hand-tooling marks inside the vessel, and high-grade natural nacre are key indicators of original 19th-century craftsmanship.

An antique brush pot functions as a focal object on an executive office desk, console table, or library bookshelf. The high-relief texture and dark polished timber create visual contrast when placed alongside modern ceramics, contemporary books, or minimalist architectural elements.

Dust the surface gently using a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth to avoid catching delicate inlaid edges. Keep the object away from direct heat sources, strong sunlight, or fluctuating humidity levels to prevent the timber from splitting or the adhesive behind the inlay from drying out.
