Brass microscopes gained prominence during the 18th and 19th centuries as advancements in optical technology and microscopy revolutionised scientific inquiry and botanical study.

These instruments were typically constructed from polished brass for the optical and mechanical components, often mounted on or housed within hardwood timber boxes such as mahogany or walnut.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-cut threads, natural patina on the brass, maker signatures engraved on the barrel or stage, and dovetail joinery on the accompanying wooden storage boxes.

Place the microscope on a study desk, bookshelf, or mantelpiece to introduce a layer of intellectual history and sophisticated texture to a room.

Maintain the item by dusting gently with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical metal polishes that can strip the historical patina, and keeping it in a stable environment away from excess humidity.
