Rare Armorial Plaque / Book Cover with Seton Family Crest. Early 19th Century.

An elaborately carved oak plaque with Seton Family Crest - On a ducal coronet, a dragon, vert, wings elevated, and spouting fire. Superbly detailed with a dragon hiding and swirling in finely carved foliage in high relief. Most likely a book cover, with a motto below crest 'Ung roy, Ung foy, Ung loy': Translates as 'One king, one faith, one law', reflecting the loyalism of the family.

Condition: Excellent condition with rich and aged dark oak patina. Possibly dated 1822 (to left side of coronet). Fitted in wooden frame for display and protection. [Stand not included].

Height = 35cm

Width = 26 cm

Depth = 2 cm (incl frame)

Thickness of plaque = 1 cm.

*The Seton's of Cariston and Treskerby Manor (Cornwall). The "Seton of Cariston" refers to a branch of the Scottish Clan Seton. Specifically, it refers to the line of Seton barons who inherited and resided at the estate of Cariston, initially in Fife, and later in Midlothian. A prominent figure in this branch is John Seton, 1st Baron of Cariston.
