First Period Worcester, produced between 1751 and 1783, represents the earliest years of the Worcester factory under founders like Dr John Wall, known for experimenting with soapstone pastes to create durable, high-quality tableware that imitated Chinese export porcelain.

The factory utilised a unique soft-paste porcelain body containing steatite (soapstone), which provided thermal shock resistance, fired in coal-burning kilns and decorated with hand-painted overglaze or underglaze pigments often inspired by Chinese imports.

Authentic pieces often feature early workman marks or crescent marks, characteristic glaze imperfections such as pinholes or pooling, and a distinctive translucent greenish-blue tint when viewed under strong transmitted light.

These historical vessels add layered texture and heritage value when displayed inside glass-fronted cabinets, on open shelving units, or as standalone decorative objects on mantelpieces and sideboards.

Antique ceramics should be hand-washed gently in lukewarm water using mild, non-ionic detergents when necessary, avoiding ultrasonic cleaners, harsh chemicals, and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight to preserve the hand-painted enamels.
