This early 19th Century Regency sofa table is fashioned from dark brown mahogany with rosewood cross-banding on the rounded rectangular drop-leaf top. It incorporates two frieze drawers fitted with beaded edges and original turned knob handles, supported by plain end pillars united by a turned central stretcher. The base rests on hipped splayed square tapered legs terminating in unusual lion's paw fore end brass caps and castors. Signs of age appear in the warm patina of the timber and the aged brass hardware. Measuring 73.7 cm high, 115 cm wide, and 72 cm deep, the table fits naturally behind a sofa in a living room, serving as a surface for lamps, books, or decorative items, with drop leaves that extend its width when extra surface area is required.

Sofa tables were developed in late eighteenth-century Britain, designed specifically to sit behind a sofa or against a wall. They feature elongated tops, shallow depths, drop-leaf ends to adjust surface area, and frieze drawers for holding writing materials or small household items.

Tables from this period were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany or high-grade mahogany veneers over oak or pine drawer linings. Construction details include hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, brass castors, turned stretchers, and splayed trestle legs.

Authentic Regency pieces display hand-carved details, hand-dovetailed drawers with natural timber shrinkage, cast brass hardware, and original patinated finishes. Examining the underside reveals saw marks and age-appropriate wear consistent with early nineteenth-century cabinetmaking.

A sofa table functions effectively behind a freestanding couch, within a hallway as a console, or beneath a window as a compact desk. The warm timber tones provide a grounding contrast against contemporary upholstered seating and clean-lined architecture.

Clean surfaces regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year following the grain. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber warping and finish fading.
