19th Century Italian Walnut Console/side Table

19th century
Description

19th Century Italian Walnut Console or Side Table.

This lovely table combines serpentine curves with fine veneers and inlay. The table frame is serpentine on every side except its back. The top and apron are veneered in dark patinated walnut. On the top the walnut veneers have been laid at an angle to create a parquetry effect. In the centre of the top and the frieze are inlaid cartouche motifs in contrasting lighter timber. The frieze and top are also widely crossbanded to create a further contrast between light and dark woods. The table stands on four cabriole legs with incurved feet.

This table is a fine piece of design and would have been extremely difficult to make due to all of the curved surfaces. A very attractive and useful table.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Italian console tables from the 19th century frequently draw inspiration from 18th-century Rococo forms, featuring serpentine aprons, cabriole legs, and intricate timber inlays or marquetry.

These tables typically feature solid walnut framing, burr walnut veneers, and contrasting timber or fruitwood marquetry inlays, often finished with traditional shellac or wax polish.

Authentic period pieces display signs of hand-carving, variable drawer construction, hand-cut marquetry veneers, and age-appropriate wear or patination on the timber underside and feet.

Position the table along a hallway or entryway wall with a simple framed mirror or artwork mounted above to contrast the dark polished wood and carved silhouette.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a dry, lint-free microfibre cloth and applying a high-grade natural beeswax paste once or twice a year, avoiding placement near direct heat sources or damp walls.
