Rockingham Porcelain Named View Basket, Applied Flowers, C 1832-40

19th century
Description

A delightful small early 19th century Rockingham porcelain basket with very finely painted central topographical view of “Thatcher Torbay”

A beautiful example on four small gold feet, with a cross-twig rustic handle with gilt highlights and naturalistically moulded delicate applied flowers. Exquisitely painted inside in minute detail is a view of a famous Thatcher Rock in Torque attributed to William Willis Bailey. The scene is framed with a gilt border of trailing vine.

The basket dates to c.1830-42, marked to the reverse with a printed puce griffin mark and red script.

A similar basket can be found in Alwyn & Angela Cox book “Rockingham 1745-1842”, colour plate 108, page 294.

Dimensions: hight - 8cm, diameter – 11 cm.

Condition: excellent condition, just some typical minor losses to applied flowers, and some very fine, hardly visible crazing to the reverse of the basket. A wonderful and well-preserved example.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Rockingham porcelain refers to fine English ceramic wares produced at the Swinton Works in Yorkshire between 1826 and 1842 under the patronage of the Earls Fitzwilliam. The manufacturer became renowned for ornamental decorative items featuring encrusted floral work, lavish gilding, and finely painted landscape vistas known as named views.

Artisans hand-modelled individual petals, leaves, and buds from moist bone china paste before delicate assembly onto the unfired body of the basket. The entire piece then underwent multiple firings to set the body, glazes, hand-painted enamelled scenes, and gilded accents.

Authentic Rockingham pieces often feature characteristic printed marks, such as the griffin crest above Rockingham Works Brameld, though many decorative items were un-marked. Identification relies on the distinctive bone china paste, heavy gilding quality, elaborate branch-form handles, and meticulously encrusted floral decorations typical of the 1830s.

A decorative porcelain basket functions as a refined accent piece when displayed on a mantelpiece, console table, or within an illuminated glass cabinet. Placing it against a neutral backdrop or alongside understated contemporary glass accentuates its intricate botanical relief and gilding.

Dust encrusted ceramic surfaces gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to avoid snapping delicate porcelain petals or scratching gilding. Avoid immersing hand-painted wares in water or using abrasive chemicals, as moisture can compromise historic restorations or cold-painted elements.
