FAQs

Enamel advertising signs, also known as porcelain enamel or vitreous enamel signs, gained popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They were utilised by businesses for outdoor advertising because the fused glass-on-metal coating provided weather resistance and lasting colour vibrancy.

These signs were produced by sifting powdered glass onto a heavy iron or steel plate, which was then fired in a kiln at high temperatures. This process fused the glass to the metal, creating a glossy, durable surface capable of withstanding harsh environmental conditions.

Authentic period signs typically feature multi-layered enamelling, heavy gauge metal bases, and maker marks along the edges or corners. Signs of age include porcelain chipping around the mounting holes, rust formation at points of impact, and minor surface crazing rather than uniform modern printing.

Enamel signs provide industrial and graphic contrast when mounted on neutral walls within modern or eclectic spaces. They are frequently displayed in kitchens, hallways, or home offices to introduce historical character and vibrant colour.

Conservation involves gentle cleaning with mild soap and warm water to remove surface dust and grime without damaging the vitreous surface. Abrasive cleaners and scouring pads must be avoided, and exposed metal areas can be treated with a microcrystalline wax to prevent further oxidation.
