Treen refers to small handmade wooden household objects and curiosities produced from the 16th century onwards, with intricate mechanical puzzle balls becoming particularly popular as decorative desktop items and pocket pastimes during the 18th and 19th centuries.

These items were typically turned on a lathe from dense hardwoods such as boxwood, fruitwood, or lignum vitae, utilising precise chisel work to carve interlocking segments from a single solid piece of timber without the use of glue.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-turned tool marks, consistent age-related patina, dry shrinkage fissures within the grain, and signs of wear appropriate to centuries of handling rather than modern precision machining.

Place the object as a tactile centrepiece on a stack of books on a coffee table, within a glass display cabinet, or on a desk surface to introduce organic warmth and historical texture to contemporary spaces.

Maintain the wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity sources, dusting gently with a dry microfibre cloth, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the dry historical surface.
