Victorian taxidermy refers to the mounting and preservation of animal specimens for scientific study and interior display, which became exceptionally popular in Britain during the nineteenth century under the influence of the naturalist movement.

Traditional cases from this era generally utilise floated sheet glass joined with black-painted paper tape or lead framing, mounted on a wooden base with naturalistic internal groundwork composed of dried grasses, moss, and twigs.

Authentic pieces by Rowland Ward of Piccadilly often feature distinctive paper trade labels, meticulous anatomical preservation, and high-quality craftsmanship, frequently set within custom glass cases designed to showcase the specimen from multiple angles.

These historical specimens work well when placed on bookshelves, sideboards, or mantelpieces alongside books and natural history artifacts to create a layered, academic aesthetic within a study or living area.

Preservation requires keeping the sealed glass case out of direct sunlight to prevent fading of the fur and delicate groundwork, maintaining a stable indoor temperature, and avoiding any moisture accumulation inside the enclosure.
