Novelty Celluloid Edward VIII Tape Measure

1900 - 1920
Description

An unusual 1920s novelty Celluloid tape measure. It is in the form of Edward VIII in the uniform of the Welsh Guards. The cloth tape measure is pulled from the rear and automatically retracts when given another sharp pull.

It is in good condition for its age. The tape measure is slightly frayed in places but it works well. There is a small nick on the front under his chin but otherwise no major damages or marks and it displays well.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced predominantly during the early 20th century, novelty tape measures made from celluloid were popular souvenirs and haberdashery items, often created to commemorate significant national events such as royal coronations.

These items were moulded from celluloid, one of the earliest synthetic plastics, housed around a retractable fabric or woven cloth measuring tape attached to an internal spring mechanism.

Authentic early celluloid pieces feature fine moulding detail, lightweight feel, and distinct seam lines where the two halves of the casing were joined, alongside era-appropriate subjects such as 1930s historical figures.

Small decorative objects and haberdashery collectables are best displayed inside glass cloches, styled on a bookshelf alongside vintage books, or organized within a shadow box frame.

Celluloid should be stored in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and damp conditions, as extreme temperature changes and lack of airflow accelerate plastic degradation.
