This French industrial wine cage dates from the later 19th or early 20th century. It is constructed from dark grey galvanised steel and wrought iron, featuring a robust grid frame structure secured with riveted strap iron. The design includes double doors fitted with a central latch, vertical uprights, and horizontal scalloped rails arranged to hold 96 bottles, alongside rear brackets intended for wall mounting. The unit exhibits visible surface wear, authentic distressing, and aged patina across the metalwork. Practical dimensions are 94 cm high, 125 cm wide, and 36 cm deep. This piece suits placement in a kitchen, dining room, or cellar for organised wine storage.

Lockable metal wine cages originated in nineteenth-century France to secure valuable vintages in private cellars, bistros, and vineyards. Constructed from heavy iron straps to withstand humid cellar conditions, they allowed air circulation around bottles while preventing unauthorized access.

Traditional wine cages are crafted from riveted wrought iron or rolled steel straps. The metal features hand-hammered joinery, forged latches, and scalloped horizontal rails configured specifically to cradle standard wine bottles.

Authentic period wine cages feature solid metal construction connected by heavy iron rivets rather than modern welds. Signs of age include natural surface oxidisation, authentic wear around the latch mechanism, and irregular hand-formed iron rails.

A metal wine cage can serve as a functional accent piece in an industrial kitchen, dining room, or dedicated home bar. It provides strong structural texture when set against brick, plaster, or neutral background walls.

Keep the metal in a climate-controlled area free from standing moisture. Clean gently with a dry soft brush and apply a microcrystalline wax or clear beeswax paste periodically to protect the patinated surface from rust.
