Staffordshire flatback spill vases were 19th-century English earthenware ornaments crafted with a flat reverse side to sit flush against a fireplace mantelpiece. The central hollow trunk or tube attached to the figurine held wooden splints or paper spills used to transfer fire from the hearth to lamps and candles.

These figures were cast in earthenware ceramic using press moulds, resulting in a hollow structure with an unadorned flat back. Decorators applied lead glazes, enamel paints, and occasionally gilt detailing over the glaze prior to a final firing.
