Description

A striking Spode sugar box and cover in the "new oval" shape with an unusual mix of oriental style decoration. A scene of various flowering plants and birds occupy the lower half with a classic floral panelled frieze around the middle and a running pattern of mythical creatures and lotus flowers. The underglaze blue and red outlines are transfer printed and then the coloured enamels and the extensive gilding hand applied over the top. Marked to the base with the blue Spode factory stamp and painted pattern number 2638 in red and the latter also inside the cover. c.1820.

It measures 12cm (4 3/4") high and 18cm (7 1/8") wide by 10cm (4") deep.

In excellent condition with no damage, repair or restoration and minor handling wear.
