FAQs

Whitework encompasses various needlework techniques executed in white thread on white fabric, heavily popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries for domestic linens and garments.

These pieces are traditionally crafted from fine linen or cotton base fabrics, utilising cotton or linen threads for the intricate embroidery and drawn thread work.

Authentic pieces typically feature hand-spun and hand-woven base cloths with irregular slubs, alongside hand-pulled thread work and meticulous needle-made stitches rather than modern machine stitching.

Antique textiles add texture and historical depth when layered over neutral modern bedding, serving as a tactile focal point in contemporary minimalist or eclectic bedrooms.

Preservation requires gentle hand washing in cool water with mild, pH-neutral soap, avoiding direct sunlight during drying, and storing unbleached in breathable cotton or acid-free tissue.
