Pair of Antique English Victorian "Stevens of Coventry" Framed Silk Bookmarkers

19th century
Description

Of Yorkshire interest ~ An interesting framed Pair of Mid 19th Century Antique English Victorian woven silk bookmarkers, here attributed to Thomas Stevens of Coventry who, at a time of disastrous recession in the traditional silk ribbon industry, succeeded in adapting the Jacquard loom to produce small multi-coloured silk pictures of infinite variety, selling his first woven silk bookmarker in 1862. The two examples here offered were clearly framed many years ago and thus remain in excellent condition. The smaller of the two decorated with a simple meditative verse , "Forget Me Not", whilst the larger is essentially a souvenir of the City of York, bearing illustrations of York Minster, His Grace the Archbishop of York  and St. Mary's Abbey.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Thomas Stevens silk bookmark, often referred to as a Stevengraph, is a Victorian ribbon produced using Jacquard looms in Coventry, England, during the 19th century.

These textiles were manufactured on automated Jacquard looms using punch cards to control the intricate interlacing of coloured silk threads, creating precise imagery and text.

Authentic pieces feature crisp woven details, distinct trademark woven text at the woven borders or backing, and period-appropriate Victorian typography and subjects.

Framed silk textiles are best displayed as part of a gallery wall or positioned in narrow wall spaces, corridors, and libraries where close viewing is possible.

Silk should be mounted using acid-free museum board under UV-protective glass, positioned away from direct sunlight and damp environments to prevent fading and fibre degradation.
