FAQs

A cricket table is a small, lightweight tripod table originating in Britain during the 18th century, traditionally featuring a round wooden top supported by three splayed legs and a stretcher base. Named for its perceived resemblance to the three-legged wooden stools used by cricket umpires or the sturdy construction associated with the game, it was utilised as a versatile moveable piece for tea, reading, or bedside use.

These tables are typically constructed using native British timbers such as oak, elm, ash, or deal, selected for local availability and strength. Construction methods involve pegged mortise and tenon joints, stretcher bases for stability on uneven floors, and multi-plank tops secured with wooden cleats or dowels rather than modern hardware.

Authentication relies on examining timber patination, tool marks, and construction integrity. Genuine period pieces exhibit hand-planed surfaces, irregular shrinkage cracks, trammel-marked or pit-sawn undersides, and oxidised iron or wooden pegged fixings consistent with pre-industrial joinery.

Its modest scale and organic silhouette make it ideal as an occasional surface beside a sofa or armchair, or as a standalone plinth for a ceramic lamp or botanicals. It adds tactile warmth and historical contrast to minimalist, rustic, or transitional spaces.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor relative humidity between 40% and 50% to prevent timber warping or cracking. Surfaces should be cleaned with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally treated with natural beeswax, avoiding silicone-based polishes, direct sunlight, and placement near heat sources.
