The George IV period, spanning from roughly 1820 to 1830, is characterised by a heavy classical influence, robust proportions, and a revival of gothic and Elizabethan motifs executed primarily in rich dark timbers like mahogany.

These tables were typically constructed from solid timbers and veneers of Cuban or Honduras mahogany, featuring central turned or carved pillars supported by strong platform bases or down-swept legs, often utilizing traditional joinery without modern fasteners.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-cut dovetails, traditional shellac or wax polishes showing natural patina and age-related wear, heavy timber weight, and construction hallmarks consistent with early 19th-century cabinet making techniques.

Pairing a rich wood antique piece with contemporary upholstery or minimalist decor creates a balanced, layered look that highlights the craftsmanship and warm tones of the timber without overwhelming the room.

Maintain antique mahogany by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting, and nourish the wood periodically using traditional beeswax applied with a soft cloth.
