Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian brass door knocker depicts a cheeky elf or imp seated on a toadstool base. Cast from solid brass, the piece has a warm golden-yellow metallic finish with burnished highlights across the relief mouldings and darker patination visible within the recessed areas. The figure has prominent pointed ears, a wry smiling expression, and knees drawn up to the chest while wearing pixie boots with upturned toes. The detailed casting shows incised linework on the toadstool cap and textured crosshatching along the stem beneath the figure. Measuring 13 cm long by 5 cm wide, the knocker comes in a compact size suitable for external or internal doors. It works well mounted on a front entrance door, porch gate, or interior study door to welcome visitors with a whimsical touch.

FAQs

During the Victorian era, cast brass door knockers frequently featured folklore and mythological figures such as imps, pixies, and grotesques, which were traditionally believed to ward off evil spirits and welcome guests.

Traditional Victorian door knockers were cast in solid brass or iron using sand-casting methods, resulting in heavy pieces with hand-chased surface details and sturdy mounting points.

Authentic period door knockers typically exhibit natural surface wear, casting details softened by historical polishing, unrefined rear textures, and original threaded mounting fixings.

Mounting a polished brass knocker onto a contrasting dark painted wooden door, such as deep green, navy, or black, creates a focused historical feature on traditional or modern entryways.

Clean the metal periodically with a soft cloth and apply a specialized brass polish or microcrystalline wax to maintain brightness and protect against uneven atmospheric oxidisation.
