Description

A pair of large late 19th century Chinese sancai glazed pottery dogs of foo in traditional colours of green, mustard and brown.

The pair of figures stand on raised rectangular bases which represent a low table draped with cloth. The decorative foo dog figures standing above are well detailed. They are modelled with one resting its paw on a pierced ball and the other playing with an upturned puppy.

The dogs have a fierce expression with bulging eyes. Their mouths are wide open showing their sharp teeth and tongues.

These large decorative figures are generally in very good condition. They display a few very small minor age related chips to the glaze.

Foo dogs, properly known as imperial guardian lions, are traditional architectural ornaments originating in ancient China, symbolising protection and prosperity.

These figures are typically fashioned from terracotta or ceramic and finished with lead-glazed techniques, most notably the three-colour sancai glaze featuring amber, green, and cream hues.

Authentic pieces often exhibit age-related crazing in the glaze, manual forming irregularities, and wear consistent with historic production methods rather than modern mass manufacturing.

These statement pieces function effectively as focal points on sideboards, entrance tables, or mantelpieces, anchoring eclectic or traditional schemes with historical presence.

Maintenance requires gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth; harsh chemicals and excessive moisture must be avoided to protect the historic glaze and ceramic body.
