This William IV card table dates from 1860 and follows a grand Regency style, constructed from solid mahogany with a dark brown finish. The rectangular top features a fold-over design with a swivel action that reveals a baize playing surface underneath. The frieze displays intricate carved scrollwork along with a central carved shell apron, whilst the central column is heavily turned with carved lozenges. The pedestal rests upon four swept legs with carved knees that terminate in carved lion's paw feet and brass hardware. The piece measures 70 cm high, 90 cm wide, and 44 cm deep overall. In a modern home, this table works well beside the front door as a console surface or in a living room as a decorative occasional piece when not in use for games.

Originating in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Irish card tables were crafted as folding games tables featuring distinct regional cabinetmaking motifs such as carved aprons, central shells, and robust pedestal bases.

These tables were typically constructed from solid mahogany and rich flame mahogany veneers, incorporating brass hinges, a rotating swivel fold-over top, and hand-carved pedestal supports.

Authentication relies on evaluating timber density, observing hand-cut joinery within the swivel frame, inspecting original brass hardware, and noting regional carving details such as acanthus leaves and shell motifs.

Positioned against a wall as a console table when folded, it can be styled with contemporary table lamps, ceramics, or a framed wall mirror directly above to create an elegant entry point.

Dust regularly using a soft lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish twice a year along the wood grain, ensuring the piece is kept away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
