Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A cassolette is a decorative vessel, originally designed as a perfume burner or incense holder, popularised in France during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. These items often feature removable lids or reversible candle nozzles and served as symmetrical mantelpiece ornaments.

Nineteenth-century examples typically combine fine veined marbles, such as green Campan or Rouge Griotte, with gilt bronze ormolu mounts. The bronze fittings are cast, chased, and gilded, often displaying neoclassical motifs like rams heads and laurel garlands.

Authentic pieces feature heavy marble construction with hand-chased gilt bronze mounts secured by internal threaded iron or brass rods. Look for detailed chasing work, natural coldness and veining in the marble, and age-appropriate wear to the gilded surfaces.

Position a pair on a marble fireplace mantelpiece or atop a dining room sideboard to introduce architectural symmetry. They also function well alongside contemporary art or minimalist ceramics on styled shelving units.

Dust surfaces regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or camel-hair brush to prevent build-up in detailed chasing. Avoid chemical cleaners, abrasive pastes, or excess water on gilded bronze, and wipe marble with a slightly damp cloth before drying immediately.
