Large Scale 18th Century Japanese Arita Imari Potiche

Sold by: Steve Sly Japanese Works of Art

As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this large scale Edo Period (1603-1867) circa 1710 Arita potiche. The vessel decorated in typical Imari pallete including vibrant green and pale yellow enamels, colours most often used during the Genroku period (1688-1704). Originally fitted with a lid this large sized vessel would have been a very opulent decorative object for a European home, imported in varying sizes by Dutch traders in the late 17th early 18th centuries, this being one of the larger examples found. Now lacking its original lid it serves a functional use as a very decorative planter, delightful bands of cherry blossom ( prunus) as well as chrysanthemums and peonies encircle the entire diameter of the bowl, this native flora interspersed with a central gilt decorated blue band. A highly decorative increasingly rare survivor that is sure to brighten up any room of your choice.
